About this poster
The struggle for female suffrage in Switzerland was a long one. For most of the century, attempts to give women the right to vote failed. Only in 1971 did Swiss women finally receive the right to vote on a national level. The opponents of women’s suffrage often used the simple argument that a mother’s role could not be combined with political participation. Today, historical campaign posters, such as this one showing a child holding a broken flower, are popular in the media and among poster collectors.
Artist: Hugo Laubi
Hugo Laubi was born in 1888 in Zurich, where he worked as an illustrator, painter and graphic artist until he died in 1959. He studied in Munich and Paris and worked as a graphic artist in London in 1911. In 1918 he became the director of the printing and lithography company Gebr.
