About this poster
Armin Hofmann designed brilliant posters in the 1950s and 1960s, taught at the Basel School of Design from 1946 to 1986 and with his colleagues contributed to the development of the Swiss International Style. Hofmann is well known for his use of black-and-white images and for his skill in conveying a message with the simplest of forms. On this 1963 poster for the Basel open-air theatre, he used photography and lettering in a unique way to represent the main symbols of the William Tell story: the apple and arrow.
