About this poster
The Rhaetian Railway is the highest north-south rail crossing in the Alps. It cuts through the canton of Grisons from Thusis up the Albula Valley, through the Engadine, over the Bernina Pass and down Val Poschiavo to Tirano in Italy. The route is a masterpiece of railway engineering that fits remarkably into the romantically rugged terrain, and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. This poster advertisement from 1913 shows the imposing castle of Tarasp, the Lower Engadine’s most famous landmark. With its beautiful autumn Alpine landscape, this is surely among the most impressive Swiss travel posters and testifies to the talent of the great Bernese poster artist Emil Cardinaux.
