About this poster
Burkhard Mangold was born in Basel in 1873, where he served an apprenticeship as an ornamental painter and attended courses at the “Gewerbeschule” in Basel. He went to Paris in 1894 and studied in Munich until 1900 where he had a studio for decorative art. He returned to Basel and worked as a teacher for lithography and glass painting. Mangold designed posters from 1896 onwards and obtained various awards for his works. In 1905 he gained the attention of lithographer J.E. Wolfensberger and designed several exceptional, Jugendstil-influenced posters like this image announcing the 5th Swiss Cider Fair to be held at the Zurich Tonhalle in 1909.
