This picturesque view of the small town of Stein am Rhein by the Zurich artist Ernst Emil Schlatter was used to advertise the local pasta factory. The company was founded in St. Gallen by Johann Jakob Lieb in 1865 and relocated to Stein am Rhein in 1870. From 1912 they produced breadcrumbs as well as pasta and from 1963 concentrated only on breadcrumbs. In 2000 the company was renamed Bonviva and today it is Switzerland’s most important producer of breadcrumbs.

Ernst Emil Schlatter was born in 1883 and studied the craft of lithography in Zurich and Stuttgart. He returned to his native city of Zurich around 1910 to work for Wolfensberger Lithographic Institute (Graphische Anstalt Wolfensberger), where he introduced several important innovations in the application of stone lithography to poster art.
