About this poster

The painter Leopoldo Metlikovitz, who worked at the Ricordi printing house in Milan, was one of Italy’s greatest and most versatile poster artists. This allegorical poster won a competition organised to announce the opening of the Simplon tunnel in 1906, which provided the first direct rail link between Northern Europe and Italy. The image shows Mercury riding on the fender of a train emerging from the tunnel, gazing towards the city of Milan far ahead. Of the two sizes in which this poster is available, this is the smaller format. A beautiful, rare original from a true Italian master of Art Nouveau poster art.
