About this poster
This 1935 poster for the Memphis cigarette brand features a stylised pelican standing proudly on a pile of cigarette packets. The famous and popular Memphis cigarettes were made with Egyptian tobacco types by the Austrian tobacco monopoly, Österreichische Tabak-Regie (later renamed Austria Tabak). The company had a cigarette factory in Dübendorf, Zurich since 1926. This colour lithograph designed by Alois Carigiet is in perfect condition.

The graphic designer, painter and illustrator Alois Carigiet was born in Trun (Grisons) in 1902 and came to Chur with his family in 1911. After finishing an apprenticeship as a stage painter in Chur, he went to work for a renowned graphic design studio in Zurich from 1923 to 1927.
