About this poster
There’s a little devilry in any alcoholic beverage - and Cappiello, an Italian master of poster design, used infernal imagery in a number of liquor promotions. This poster, created in 1906, is the artist’s most famous one: a sneaky green demon un-corking a bottle of Maurin Quina. This French absinthe aperitif was produced by Maurin-Brenas of Le Puy, a business founded by Auguste Maurin, who in 1884 opened a distillery in Esplay in the Haute-Loire district. This product was actually banned by the French government soon after it was released!

Leonetto Cappiello was born in 1875 in Livorno, Italy and died in 1942 in Cannes, France. In 1898 he moved to Paris and became known through his caricatures of famous artists of the time, such as Yvette Guilbert.
