About this poster
This poster is clearly from a bygone age when smoking was considered perfectly acceptable. Today, the Mahalla cigarette factory is no more, restaurants and public spaces are smoke-free, and an advertisement showing a cigarette and the protected Edelweiss flower would be forbidden. Nevertheless, this 1939 design by Viktor Rutz is highly effective, perfectly lithographed and quite decorative.

Viktor Rutz was born in 1913 in St. Gallen. He was a self-taught painter and graphic designer. From 1931 to 1950, he created more than 200 posters that gave him international recognition. In his compositions he worked with colourful lighting effects, and his posters for the food industry placed a striking emphasis on the product and its advantages.
