An impressive poster lithograph from 1925, designed by Anton Trieb to advertise the Gotthard railway. A ride through the Alps must have inspired awe in any traveler in the 1920s (not to say that it no longer does today…). The building of the Gotthard railway line lasted from 1872 to 1882. The project was driven to a great extent by Alfred Escher, a rich and influential Zurich banker and politician. The tunnel was excavated and constructed by about 15 000 Italian workers, who lived in harrowing conditions. At 15 kilometres, the Gotthard tunnel was the longest in the world at the time it was completed.

Anton Trieb was born in Bavaria in 1883 and his family emigrated to Switzerland in 1896. In 1904 he started an apprenticeship as a graphics illustrator at Orell Füssli and kept working for the company afterwards. In 1916 he opened his own studio in Wallisellen near Zurich and from then on worked successfully as a watercolour painter, illustrator and graphic designer.
