About this poster
“Hydrodynamics” is one of six designs from the first multilingual poster series “Atoms for peace”, which Erik Nitsche created for the U.S. General Dynamics corporation on the occasion of the first International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, held in Geneva. This is perhaps the most famous image of the six posters. Bearing the series slogan in French, this design represents the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, developed by General Dynamics. The submarine emerges from the shell of its namesake, the nautilus, in an ingenious visual message which places technological progress in the context of evolution.
