About this poster
Hans Thöni designed well-known travel posters for winter resports in the 1930s as well as the famous „Der Kluge reist im Zuge“ (smart people trake the train) poster for the SBB in 1958. This traditional, rural scene featuring a farmer in traditional Appenzell costume was meant to encourage Swiss people to spend their holidays travelling whithin their home country during the Second World War.

Hans Thoni studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich (School of Applied Arts) and was trained for four years in Paris before settling in Berne. He was an illustrator and a postage stamp, poster and exhibition designer and a founding member of the VSG (Verband Schweizer Grafiker).
