Julius Maggi, who was born in Frauenfeld, brought the first Maggi instant soup onto the market in 1886. He had taken over his father’s mill in 1869 and had been investigating how to combat the malnutrition that was widespread among factory workers. His first Maggi soup was made of protein-rich pea and bean flour. Maggi also developed the famous seasoning and designed the highly recognisable brown seasoning bottle with the yellow-red label. In 1887 a branch was opened in Singen, Germany, where Maggi seasoning is still produced today. In 1900, the first soup, sauce and bouillon cubes were launched, and in 1958 the first canned ravioli appeared. The Maggi company merged with Nestlé in 1947, and today Maggi is a subsidiary of Nestlé Germany with headquarters in Frankfurt am Main.
