Rudolf Friedrich Steinfels was born in 1808 in Zurich and became a pioneer in soap manufacturing. In 1834, he began to expand his father’s tallow-melting and candle factory and added a soap factory. Due to increasing hygiene awareness and the textile and dyeing industry’s demand for olein and olive soaps, production was expanded further still. In 1880, a factory was built in Zurich – what had once been an artisanal business was now an industrial company. Improvements in quality allowed Swiss soap production to establish itself alongside the previously all-powerful market leader Marseille. The firm manufactured well-known products such as Maga, Niaxa and Dish-Lav detergents. Under Eric Steinfels, production was relocated and the detergents were sold to Henkel. Today, Friedrich Steinfels AG is an estate agency.
